Absolutely thrilled with the way the Hickok Homest Absolutely thrilled with the way the Hickok Homestead renovation has turned out! Still waiting on blinds for the sliding glass door & shutters for the picture window in the living room. Getting everything tidied up (so much dust everywhere) & organized. I'm confident my parents would approve. My mother would love all the counter space in the kitchen!
This is a sight no one has seen since 1982! The r This is a sight no one has seen since 1982!

The renovation of my beloved childhood home is underway! #1Son, Robert, is working hard, prepping for the contractor to work some magic. He's ripping out carpets, tack strips, & baseboards, and peeling off wallpaper. Not to mention cleaning out closets & cupboards. Lots of purging taking place.

Look at those gorgeous hardwood floors! But no, I'm not going to leave them exposed, in part because, as is visible in the last photo, they aren't in all of the rooms. My parents added about 675 square feet to the house 43 years ago. In the family room, you can see the outline of where my bedroom used to be before it was converted.

It's going to be beautiful again when this project is complete. I think Kenny & Ethel, the parental unit, would be proud. I know they'd be tickled about Robert's involvement!

I still have to decide what colors to paint the exterior. 🤔 The dreadful beige & green have to go.

Now, if I could just get those pesky home flippers to stop calling, texting, emailing, & snailmailing me with ridiculous lowball offers to buy the house, I'd be a happy woman. 🤦‍♀️ It's not for sale! Not now & not ever . . . at least as long as I'm sucking air into my lungs!

In the photo, I'm with some of my favorite people on the planet -- my boys & my grandnieces. Quinn is 10 & Raven will be 7 in September! They're headed to 5th & 1st grade this week.

Matthew is still an Accountant with the State of California, Department of Social Services, & Robert is assisting me with a total renovation of the Hickok Homestead on Crescent Avenue. More about that in subsequent posts, too.

Matthew and I had a great time when we stayed in M Matthew and I had a great time when we stayed in Makena last month. But I'm so happy to be back at my favorite spot again. I'm staying on the 12th floor, as I have numerous times, enjoying this panoramic view from the lanai. Yes, it is different now as those of us visiting are sharing space with a large number of employees & Lahaina residents for whom this resort is their home for the time being. And it was heartbreaking to drive through Lahaina Town for the first time since the fire, especially when I got to the area along the Bypass where almost 100 crosses stand, one for each victim. I just passed through, but this transformed Maui is the everyday reality for its people. I can't help contemplating why such a beautiful, spiritual place & its citizens have to endure such destruction & tragedy. Of course, there are no answers. But aloha is more than a word; it is a belief & way of life. The word has been coopted commercially & socially, & gets thrown around casually, but it means presence (alo) & breath (ha). It is a profound concept when you ponder it. Aloha will carry Maui & its people through this time of grief, mourning, & manifesting a different future than was contemplated, just as everyone I have encountered has welcomed me with warmth & appreciation. In this ever-changing yet unchanging view from my lanai, I see & feel Maui's unbreakable spirit, & am grateful to be able to savor it & this indescribable beauty yet again.

It's a great time to visit Maui because local busi It's a great time to visit Maui because local businesses need tourism to survive! And every business owner & employee thanked us for proceeding with our trip & supporting their efforts to help not just themselves, but their ohana, many of whom are now residing with them & looking for jobs.

The aloha spirit at the Kula Lodge & Restaurant is amazing. They do not yet have clearance to use the water, but did that stop them from serving delicious food? Nope! The loco moco was outstanding, served in a paper bowl with plastic utensils and an ice cold bottle of water! They are bringing in barrels of fresh water to cook the items on a limited menu, & wash pots and pans. They even put big water bottles with pumps in the restrooms for guests to wash their hands & are offering stays in their quaint, charming lodge at steeply discounted rates for guests who don't mind a sponge bath! The staff are all upbeat, friendly, delighted to be working . . . and making it work.

Over at the Maui Tropical Plantation, the Mill House is now Cafe O'Lei. The Maui onion soup is delicious & the setting beautiful, although this photo of the hillside & fields shows the effect of the ongoing drought on Maui. My photos from previous visits feature a lush, green hillside & crops growing in the fields. But as Californians know, the rain returns -- eventually -- and the grass & vegetation turn green again.

I asked Matthew to snap a photo as I was driving of just one of the many fields around the Kahului airport where a total of approximately 10,000 rental cars are sitting idle that would normally be navigated all over the island by happy tourists. The cars have been sitting in what were once pineapple and sugar cane fields, but those industries are long gone. Now Maui relies on tourism & construction to keep its economy running.

We stayed in south Maui & never ventured to the west side out of respect for Lahaina town & her people.

Sometimes the Instagram algorithm gods perform good deeds. One day, they showed me @alannagraceauthor's account & I began following her. On February 26th, she raved about 𝗪𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐔𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞, a book I had never heard about which was written by an author, 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐛𝐲 writing as Eliza Gordon, I was not familiar with. Jenn graciously sent me a digital copy of the book, but I loved it so much I had to buy a physical copy for my home library, & have been recommending it to all of my friends & followers.

𝗪𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐔𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞 is the book we all need when the world at large &/or events occurring around & impacting us just feel too heavy, too overwhelming, too cruel. It's the book you want to crawl under a blanket with, silence your phone, & immerse yourself in Rosie's journey, cheering for her & the folks who love her. It is an 𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 story that reminds us there really are wonderful, loving people all around us who are dedicated to caring for each other.

Jenn has also written three series, with a new one launching in August. 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐲𝐚 is Book 1 in her Hendry Family Saga. In addition, she's a book editor & will be releasing 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐌𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 & 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐫 soon.

So we'll have a lot to chat about & I hope you can either join us this Friday or watch the video of our discussion which will be posted here.

🔎 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 👭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤 by Avery Bi 🔎 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 👭

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤 by Avery Bishop, is a survivor's story. Twenty years ago, identical 15 -year-old twin girls were abducted while walking in the woods behind their home. They had distinctly different personalities. Megan was a "good girl," but Allison had grown defiant, getting poor grades, cutting classes, partying, & Megan had just found Allison & her friend drinking & smoking pot. Allison stomped out the back door, Megan followed her, & they encountered a man who seemed kind, pretending to looking for his dog. He overpowered, drugged, & abducted them, & held them in cages, abusing & nearly starving them for 147 days until Megan miraculously escaped, but Allison was never found.

In the aftermath, Megan was convinced to pen a memoir. Eventually, she attended college & married a successful attorney with whom she shares an adorable 5-year-old daughter.

The 20th anniversary edition of her book is to be released, putting Megan back in the news, but interest in the case never waned among true crime afficionados.

Bishop relates the story through Megan's first-person account of present-day events & her emotional struggles. alternating with a third-person account of the girls' captivity which advances incrementally from the day of the kidnapping up to the escape.

Secrets, lies, betrayals, blackmail, & an ongoing hunt for the serial kidnapper/murderer figure in a tautly-constructed, relentless tale. The short chapters are fast-paced, & Bishop cleverly revealing salient details at expertly-timed junctures that compel the story forward.

One of the twists is easily guessed, but there is more to the story, including 𝘩𝘰𝘸 Megan escaped, but Allison did not; the lasting impact of trauma & survivor's guilt on Megan's psyche; & the enduring, complicated power of sibling relationships.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐤 is engrossing, entertaining, & thought-provoking, & has made me an 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 fan.

🔎 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 ⚖️ Author 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬 immediately b 🔎 𝓑𝓸𝓸𝓴 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 ⚖️

Author 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬 immediately became one of my favorite authors when I read 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫 a few years ago & it remains one of my all-time favorite psychological thrillers. I highly recommend it.

Now, he has crafted another fast-paced, keep-'em-guessing thriller. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 is just as twisty, twisted, & masterfully constructed. Short, action-packed chapters alternate between the weeks leading up to the murder of one of his main characters & the days immediately following the crime during which the investigation proceeds. I 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 it.

At the heart of the story is Allison Brice, a highly successful former prosecutor now in private practice. She is convinced her husband, Finley, is a philanderer. He's been out of work for several years & claims always to be on the verge of a big deal that will put his sales career back on track. She is also sure that her beloved younger brother, Luke, a renowned high school baseball coach, is mixed up with a woman who is using him & will ruin his life. Allison can't tolerate either situation, so she 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 take matters into her own hands.

Lies. Betrayals. Faulty assumptions that lead to erroneous conclusions. Toxic relationships. Revenge. Blackmail. Ellis creates thoroughly fascinating, multi-layered characters who are smart, keeping secrets, & intent on staying one move ahead of their nemesis. Even if that individual is a spouse or family member.

Of course there are legal complications. Criminal charges. Looming potential prison sentences. Because Ellis is not just an attorney, but an esteemed justice of the Illinois Appellate Court, all of the legal issues are plausible & explained in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner.

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 is a riveting, emotionally complex, & memorable thriller, brilliantly imagined & flawlessly executed. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐜𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐝 has long been one of my favorite authors. And just when I think her writing can't get any better . . . she surprises me with another exceptionally good thriller that surpasses her previous books.

It's not necessary that you read her 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 in order, but I can't recommend strongly enough that you 𝘥𝘰. Because the stories' impact is cumulative, the nuanced context increasingly powerful.

Jess Lambert's life changed forever on the night she was involved in a motor vehicle accident. She was driving & suffered permanent injury, but her beloved daughter, Isla, was killed. She returned to her job as a detective with new purpose to solve cases & help victims of crime. But her dedication comes at the highest conceivable price & in the 4th volume, 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝗪𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐞, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 Jess values is on the line, including her own freedom.

The stories are intricately, deftly plotted, the characters fully formed & believable. McDonald explores their emotional struggles & motivations with unsparing honesty & insight. Jess' internal dialogue is wrenchingly, heartbreakingly raw, & McDonald's writing has a cinematic quality that draws readers into the quirky town of Black Lake which is itself an indispensable character in the tense stories.

Contemporary, fast-paced, riveting, & emotionally resonant, 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝗪𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐞 is the culmination of an engrossing dramatic arc that establishes yet another benchmark in McDonald's outstanding writing.

Author 𝐑. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 writes what he knows. He lives in a restored 200 year-old home on a small island in Mid-Coast Maine & sets his atmospheric fictional stories in New England. His award-nominated Gus Wheeler FBI Thriller series consists of 2 volumes: 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬 & 𝗪𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. If you haven't read the books yet, you have time to get caught up because the 3rd installment, 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬, will be released on July 29, 2026. It sounds creepily fascinating & I can't wait to read it.

𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 . . .

The disfigured body of a missing teenager is found in an unmarked grave in northern Maine. FBI agent Gus Wheeler & his partner arrive on scene & discover a 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 grave, but the remains are so badly burned, identification proves difficult. Yet the 2 bodies have something strange in common: a large lead cross laid upon each chest.

The locals are uncooperative, & rural law enforcement is 2 steps behind. Enlisting help from a Theology & Biblical Studies expert, they discover the murders are lifted straight from ancient scripture, the burials consistent with an archaic religious practice. Connecting the victims to a specific church adhering to a strict doctrine of the Old Testament creates more confusion than clarity.

As the investigation widens, the agents face threats & suspicion. Then someone inside the church begins leaving them clues, but are they friend or foe? With time running out, Gus must determine if their secret guide is leading them toward the answers . . . or deeper into an underworld of twisted dogma & ancient rituals.

𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐲 was a running back with the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, & my beloved San Francisco 49ers. Now his experience navigating "worlds where performance is public, pressure is constant, and failure is unforgiving" informs his fiction writing. His debut novel, 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧, will be published on 09/01/26, & is just the first book featuring fictional Coltrane Davis. I'm always excited to discover a new author 𝘢𝘯𝘥 series, so I'm looking forward to reading this book.

𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴:

Coltrane Davis is at once a knight & a hustler. He has attained wealth & success, graduating from San Diego's back alleys to the halls of power through his partnership with Saul Sollman, a crooked kingmaker among the city's elite. Running multimillion dollar scams with Saul, he has been Saul's fixer, but now he wants out of the hustle so to focus on his teenage daughter's burgeoning tennis career & finally be the dad he has always wanted to be.

But when the Los Angeles Chargers' star running back vanishes one evening before a big game, Coltrane is drawn into the investigation into his whereabouts by Saul & his protégé, the player's agent. The stakes escalate with a gut-punch when the trail leads into San Diego’s underworld of drugs & prostitution, & reveals clues to the disappearance of his daughter's best friend, whose loss has haunted him. Torn by the unreconcilable demands of the life he can't seem to quit & his fierce desire to protect his own, Coltrane brings himself & his loved ones to the brink of destruction in his quest to free himself from Saul's control & focus on what really matters: family.

𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 promises to be a hard-hitting, heart wrenching crime story blending elements of jazz, football, & a gritty portrait of a city divided.

When a male colleague is found dead in Carly’s office -- her name scrawled next to his body -- everything she’s strived to achieve is at stake. There are eerie similarities to her mother’s attack, and Carly is determined to uncover the truth.

Yet things take a bizarre turn when she suddenly experiences lost time, waking up in strange places, and flashes of dormant memories . . . that can’t possibly be real. Because, if they 𝘢𝘳𝘦, she was 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 the night her mother was killed.

Could Carly have been responsible for her mother's death?

Or is something more sinister at play in her stepfamily’s perfect world?

Last month my in-person book club loved 𝐀𝐦𝐲 𝐉𝐨 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬' multi-layered, emotionally resonant tale of friendship, loss, love, betrayal, chasing dreams, the recording industry, & the magic & power of music. It incorporates multiple themes that merit reflection & conversation. Thanks again to Celadon Books for generously providing a copy for each member.

This month we read & discussed this important work of nonfiction by 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐨. We are daughters of the Greatest Generation & students of history. When I recommended we read it, I had no idea that the narrative would prove to be so eerily timely. It's an illuminating, haunting examination of the events that brought about the end of World War II . . . & the aftermath. Portions are difficult to read & utterly unforgettable. But we owe it to the people of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, & their descendants, to read their stories & learn from them. Thank you, Blackstone Publishing.

Claims of libel & brainwashing by a licensed therapist for financial gain should provide plenty of twists, revelations, & fascinating characters to talk about! Thanks to Scribner for a copy.

Hattie couldn’t have been more wrong.

Investigative journalist Ross Eeling has come calling. He agrees to keep Hattie’s new identity a secret on one condition: Hattie must tell him things she’s never told the vulture-like press before -- about her son, the murders of so many innocent women, the impact on a devastated family, & the depths of a mother’s love. Ross wants the 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩.

Dredging up the most painful moments of her life proves to be a revelation for Hattie, too. The past is more complicated & disturbing than she realizes. And its deadly repercussions are far from over.

Her father, Abe, has always sworn he was the last person to see Elle Harlow alive, but when a meteor strikes the woods of their sleepy Pennsylvania town & a piece of Elle’s past emerges from the wreckage, the truth of her disappearance sets fire to everything Marijohn believes about herself, her music, & her ability to love with abandon.

Exalting the lush hills of Appalachia & the bright lights of Nashville, 𝗪𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞 reveals the legacy of Elle Harlow, the bold voice that defined her, the intimate betrayal that undid her, & the unexpected faith of another young woman determined to resurrect her.
